Everyone relates differently, and sometimes different styles can affect the flow of interaction. Styles of relating range from passionate to sedate, distant to intimate, casual to serious, and more.

Knowing your particular style of relating helps you to better understand and deal with issues around conflict resolution, chemistry, rapport, attraction, or other aspects of relationship dynamics.

Take the following personality assessment to determine your relationship style.

Instructions: Select ONE letter from each of the two groups below that best describes your general attitudes and behaviors for most of your life. No one paragraph will describe you exactly, so select the one from each group that fits you the best.

Group 1

A. I’ve been fairly independent and assertive. I feel that life works best when you meet it head-on. I set my own goals, get involved, and want to make things happen. I don’t like sitting around – I want to achieve something, hopefully big. I don’t seek confrontations, but I don’t let people push me around. Most of the time I know what I want and I go for it. I tend to work hard and play hard.

B. I’ve tended to be quiet and am used to being on my own. I usually don’t draw much attention to myself socially. It’s generally unusual for me to assert myself very forcefully. X. I usually maintain a positive outlook on life and think things will work out for the best. I find things to get enthused about and different ways to occupy myself. I like being around people and making them happy. I don’t always feel great, but I try not to let it show. Sometimes I’ve put off dealing with my own problems for too long.

Y. I have strong feelings about things – it’s easy to tell when I’m unhappy. I’m more sensitive than I let on – I can be guarded with people. I want to know where I stand with others and who and what I can count on. When I’m upset about something, I wish someone would understand and feel what I feel. I don’t like other people telling me what to do. I’d rather decide for myself.

Z. I tend to be logical and self-controlled – I’m uncomfortable dealing with feelings. I prefer working on my own, and I’m quite efficient – even perfectionistic. I try not to get caught up in my feelings when there are problems and personal conflicts. I don’t want my emotions to distract me from what is important to me. When others “get to me” I usually don’t let it show.
